Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop add AI features that do hours of design work in minutes
New tools create and adjust fine details with prompts and reference images instead of tedious manual adjustments Adobe is rolling out a bunch of new AI features for Photoshop and Illustrator that aim to speed up the design process and offer more control and variety to users. Using Adobe's Firefly generative AI models, the company suggests it will take a fraction of the time it currently takes to manually produce minute image details. One of the most notable additions is the Generative Shape Fill feature. It fills in detailed vector graphics to shapes based on text prompts like the one in the above image. The Firefly Vector AI model handles the rest, and you suddenly have multiple options for logos and other branded material. A graphic designer working on a new logo for a tech startup could use Generative Shape Fill to quickly generate complex vector patterns and shapes that align with the brand's futuristic theme. By entering specific text prompts like "geometric tech shapes" or "futuristic circuits," the designer can explore various intricate designs without manually drawing each element. To build a pattern from scratch, the new Text to Pattern option does as the name suggests and converts a text prompt into a scalable vector pattern. If you don't know how to describe exactly what you want, there's even a new Style Reference feature that takes uploaded images as inspiration for Adobe's AI creation. Similarly, the new Retype feature can edit otherwise static text and offer ideas for a font to match the image. The new Photoshop-specific AI features center more on streamlining the often repetitive tasks necessary for editing images. The Selection Brush Tool and Adjustment Brush Tool do as their names hint and make selecting and adjusting parts of an image easier with AI assistance to separate out the elements with more precision. The new AI features are more than just digital aids. The Dimension tool can make precise sizing measurements, while the Mockup feature can produce visual prototypes that fit the curves and edges of real-life objects. So, an architect designing a new residential building could accurately plot out floor plans and elevations with the Dimension tool, while a fashion designer might apply Mockup to their designs to see how they look on different types of garments. No matter how good the AI tools are, Adobe is still embroiled in the debate over how its Firefly AI models get trained. The company recently made it clear it won't use projects made by its customers for AI training, but the larger conflict over ethical AI and synthetic media is far from resolved. Still, AI augmentation of Illustrator and Photoshop marks a milestone for Adobe's technology strategy. And Adobe has a lot of utopian ideals, at least in its official philosophy. The company described its goal for the new AI tools as not only increasing productivity but also creativity. The idea is that AI helps designers push the boundaries of their vision. "Adobe's new innovations in Illustrator and Photoshop are built directly into designers' existing workflows, offering new ways to create and helping them to work faster and focus on what they do best - drawing, designing, and bringing their creative visions to life," Adobe senior vice president for digital media Ashley Still said in a release on the new features.

Adobe Adds New AI Tools to Photoshop and Illustrator
Adobe today updated its Illustrator and Photoshop Creative Cloud apps, introducing a range of new features that streamline productivity. Many of the additions take advantage of generative AI and machine learning to save creators time. Photoshop has a new Selection Brush Tool for selecting areas by brushing over them without having to use the Quick Mask mode. The tool has opacity and hardness settings for feathered edges, allowing for more seamless selections. The Adjustment Brush Tool, which has been in beta, is also available. It allows for painting on adjustments to brightness, saturation, and more, with options for fine tuning selections. Photoshop's Generate Image text to image feature is also out of beta, and it can be used to generate dozens of ideas in minutes using a text prompt and/or reference images. Adobe Illustrator has a Generative Shape Fill feature for filling shapes with detail and color. Adobe says that users can match the style and color of their own artwork to create multiple editable and scalable vector graphic options. With Mockup, designers can see their creations on objects like product packaging and apparel, with the tool automatically adjusting art to fit the edges of the object. Other new features in Illustrator include the Dimension tool for precise sizing, enhanced selection capabilities, and faster pan and zoom speeds. These new features are available in the latest versions of Illustrator and Photoshop on the desktop. More information can be found on Adobe's website.

Adobe updates Photoshop, Illustrator to turn any text editable with AI and more
Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More Adobe isn't letting the fracas from earlier this year over it's Terms of Service get in the way of introducing new generative AI features. The company today announced a series of gen AI upgrades to Photoshop and Illustrator, its Creative Cloud desktop software programs for editing images and creating them, respectively, powered by its underlying Firefly 3 AI model. We haven't tested them yet ourselves, but Adobe's Principal Designer for Machine Intelligence & New Technology Brooke Hopper and Principal Director Evangelist Paul Trani showed off some demos to us in a video conference ahead of the news last night. To my casual/"pro-sumer" perspective (I use Adobe Creative Cloud, namely Photoshop, for editorial work at VentureBeat and other projects), the features seem incredibly useful and time-saving. Here's a run down: Generative fills, font matching, text conversion and automatic transformations in Illustrator Adobe Illustrator is now equipped with several cutting-edge features aimed at enhancing productivity and creative control: Hopper said the feature would help designers avoid the so-called "Amazon effect...when you order something on Amazon and you get it and it's definitely not the right size." This feature personally blew me away in the demo, as it lets Illustrator users drag logos and other designs onto any other product in a 2D image, say, a baseball hat or mug or flexible food package, and it automatically, nearly instantaneously transforms the logo to fit the contours and shape of the underlying product. It even works on "an image which has as little information as possible...no horizon line, no background colors, nothing," said Trani as he demoed the feature for us. Illustrator also adds: Photoshop adds Photoshop users can look forward to a range of new tools designed to simplify complex edits and empower creators: Both Illustrator and Photoshop benefit from a new Contextual Taskbar that automatically changes to include relevant buttons, related imagery and next steps in the design process, making it easier for users to navigate their projects. The features are available in the latest versions of both desktop apps starting today. Customer commitment Adobe says it is committed to integrating AI in a way that respects and supports the creative community. The Firefly AI models are designed to be safe for commercial use, trained only on the public domain and on content Adobe already owns or licenses directly from creators such as the images uploaded to Adobe Stock. However, as VentureBeat previously reported, some Adobe Stock creators weren't happy that Adobe elected to train the Firefly AI family of image generation and modification models atop their work, especially since that use wasn't expressly outlined in Adobe Stock's terms. Yet Adobe pointed out previously to us and others that its licensing terms did permit broad usage of new technologies on content submitted to Adobe Stock specifically. Earlier this year, creatives and Adobe Creative Cloud users balked when Adobe introduced a new Terms of Service that seemed in their eyes to allow it even broader access to user's content, including content that they were editing or working on for clients confidentially within Adobe programs and never uploaded to the web. Adobe clarified repeatedly it was only accessing this content to enable AI features to modify it, not to train on it, but ultimately ended up revising its terms to make this even more explicit. Once again, in the video conference with VentureBeat, Adobe recommitted not to training on customer content unless it was uploaded to Adobe Stock. "We did not train on your content unless you intentionally submitted it to Adobe Stock," Hopper said. "That would be the only time that we turn on your content. We are putting creators at the forefront of all of this -- you are in control of what goes into the model."

New Photoshop and Illustrator Tools Are Adobe Firefly's Most Significant Updates Yet
Katelyn is an associate writer with CNET covering social media and online services. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in media and journalism. You can often find her with a paperback and an iced coffee during her time off. New AI tools give Adobe creators more design and editing firepower. Adobe is bringing its popular AI feature to Illustrator users and releasing a slew of new tools and updates, including a brand-new AI image generator in Photoshop. These are some of the most substantial updates to Adobe Firefly since the company first released it last year. The company's AI tools are integrated into its suite of design programs, which means you must be a Creative Cloud subscriber to use the AI design tools. The biggest update for Photoshop is the introduction of a text-to-image generator, which can generate a whole image from a text prompt. Previously, you could only generate AI art for portions of designs with generative fill, not complete images. Generative fill is also getting updated to handle more detailed renderings. Photoshop is also getting new brush selection and adjustment tools, and updates to the contextual taskbar should make it easier for users to input prompts and edit designs. A new beta model for Illustrator is powering several new tools, the biggest of which is the generative shape fill tool. With it, creators can select a shape, type in their prompt and fill the shape with AI-generated content (stylized as detailed vector graphics). It's similar to how the generative fill feature in Photoshop works. Illustrator is also getting a slew of other new and newly updated editing tools, including enhanced selection tools, a text-to-pattern feature and the ability to input style references. Adobe's AI program came under fire earlier this year when the company updated its terms of service to allow it to train its AI models on users' designs. Many users were upset, and because Adobe's Creative Cloud suite is most often used by professional creators and companies, it sparked a new concern about AI potentially training on sensitive or copyrighted data. After the backlash, Adobe reversed the policy, saying it would stop any training. Now, Adobe says it will "never" train on customer content and that it will take a "creator-friendly approach" to AI.

Demystifying AI-Assisted Artistry With Adobe Apps Using NVIDIA RTX
Editor's note: This post is part of the AI Decoded series, which demystifies AI by making the technology more accessible, and showcases new hardware, software, tools and accelerations for RTX PC users. Adobe Creative Cloud applications, which tap NVIDIA RTX GPUs, are designed to enhance the creativity of users, empowering them to work faster and focus on their craft. These tools seamlessly integrate into existing creator workflows, enabling greater productivity and delivering power and precision. Generative AI creates new data in forms such as images or text by learning from existing data. It effectively visualizes and generates content to match what a user describes and helps open up fresh avenues for creativity. Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of creative generative AI models that offer new ways to ideate and create while assisting creative workflows using generative AI. They're designed to be safe for commercial use and were trained, using NVIDIA GPUs, on licensed content, like Adobe Stock Images, and public domain content where copyright has expired. Firefly features are integrated in Adobe's most popular creative apps. Adobe Photoshop features the Generative Fill tool, which uses simple description prompts to easily add content from images. With the latest Reference Image feature currently in beta, users can also upload a sample image to get image results closer to their desired output. Generative Expand allows artists to extend the border of their image with the Crop tool, filling in bigger canvases with new content that automatically blends in with the existing image. RTX-accelerated Neural Filters, such as Photo Restoration, enable complex adjustments such as colorizing black-and-white photos and performing style transfers using AI. The Smart Portrait filter, which allows non-destructive editing with filters, is based on work from NVIDIA Research. The brand-new Generative Shape Fill (beta) in Adobe Illustrator, powered by the latest Adobe Firefly Vector Model, allows users to accelerate design workflows by quickly filling shapes with detail and color in their own styles. With Generative Shape Fill, designers can easily match the style and color of their own artwork to create a wide variety of editable and scalable vector graphic options. Adobe Illustrator's Generative Recolor feature lets creators type in a text prompt to explore custom color palettes and themes for their vector artwork in seconds. NVIDIA will continue working with Adobe to support advanced generative AI models, with a focus on deep integration into the apps the world's leading creators use. Adobe Premiere Pro is one of the most popular and powerful video editing solutions. Its Enhance Speech tool, accelerated by RTX, uses AI to remove unwanted noise and improve the quality of dialogue clips so they sound professionally recorded. It's up to 4.5x faster on RTX PCs. Auto Reframe, another Adobe Premiere feature, uses GPU acceleration to identify and track the most relevant elements in a video, and intelligently reframes video content for different aspect ratios. Scene Edit Detection automatically finds the original edit points in a video, a necessary step before the video editing stage begins. Separating a foreground object from a background is a crucial step in many visual effects and compositing workflows. Adobe After Effects has a new feature that uses a matte to isolate an object, enabling capabilities including background replacement and the selective application of effects to the foreground. Using the Roto Brush tool, artists can draw strokes on representative areas of the foreground and background elements. After Effects uses that information to create a segmentation boundary between the foreground and background elements, delivering cleaner cutouts with fewer clicks. The Substance 3D Collection is Adobe's solution for 3D material authoring, texturing and rendering, enabling users to rapidly create stunningly photorealistic 3D content, including models, materials and lighting. Visualizing products and designs in the context of a space is compelling, but it can be time-consuming to find the right environment for the objects to live in. Substance 3D Stager's Generative Background feature, powered by Adobe Firefly, solves this issue by letting artists quickly explore generated backgrounds to composite 3D models. Once an environment is selected, Stager can automatically match the perspective and lighting to the generated background. Adobe Substance 3D Sampler, also part of the Substance 3D Collection, is designed to transform images of surfaces and objects into photorealistic physically based rendering (PBR) materials, 3D models and high-dynamic range environment lights. With the recent introduction of new generative workflows powered by Adobe Firefly, Sampler is making it easier than ever for artists to explore variations when creating materials for everything from product visualization projects to the latest AAA games. Sampler's Text-to-Texture feature allows users to generate tiled images from detailed text prompts. These generated images can then be edited and transformed into photorealistic PBR materials using the machine learning-powered Image-to-Material feature or any Sampler filter. Image-to-Texture similarly enables the creation of tiled textures from reference images, providing an alternate way to prompt and generate variations from existing visual content. Sampler's Text-to-Pattern feature uses text prompts to generate tiling patterns, which can be used as base colors or inputs for various filters, such as the Cloth Weave filter for creating original fabric materials. All of these generative AI features in the Substance 3D Collection, supercharged with RTX GPUs, are designed to help 3D creators ideate and create faster. Adobe Lightroom's AI-powered Raw Details feature produces crisp detail and more accurate renditions of edges, improves color rendering and reduces artifacts, enhancing the image without changing its original resolution. This feature is handy for large displays and prints, where fine details are visible. Super Resolution helps create an enhanced image with similar results as Raw Details but with 2x the linear resolution. This means that the enhanced image will have 2x the width and height of the original image -- or 4x the total pixel count. This is especially useful for increasing the resolution of cropped imagery. For faster editing, AI-powered, RTX-accelerated masking tools like Select Subject, which isolates people from an image, and Select Sky, which captures skies, enable users to create complex masks with the click of a button.
