Claude Artifacts are now free for all -- 7 prompts to try it for yourself
Artifacts are one of the most innovative and useful AI features of the past year and one of the reasons we named Claude our chatbot of 2024. With the most recent update Artifacts are now available to anyone using Claude, including those on the free plan. Anthropic, the AI startup behind Claude, is also bringing Artifacts to mobile, making them viewable and creatable in the iOS and Android apps. Each one can be shared and remixed. The feature essentially lets users ask Claude to create some code, a block of text or even a graphic and have it displayed accurately in the sidebar. This is a great way to prototype an application, or just build a fun quick game to play. When Artifacts first launched I created 7 relatively complex Artifact ideas including language flashcards, an animator, and a recipe app. Now the feature is free, I've come up with 7 more you can try yourself. The more specific you can be with the initial prompt the better, but each new instance of Claude is the start of a conversation, so you can easily just add additional details and features in follow-up prompts. Here I've used words like "React" and "artifact" as that tells Claude to use Javascript React to create the code and do so in a way that works with an Artifact. One thing to remember with Claude, the three words "make it better" work wonders. It will come back with logical upgrades or changes. Equally, if you're working with code or graphics as we are with each of these prompts "make it prettier" can also be enough for a big upgrade. First, we will have Claude create a simple calculator app that is fully functional but with basic features. It will appear in the sidebar and be usable. You could upgrade it by following up with Claude and asking for "scientific calculator features" or a specific color scheme. The prompt: "Create a simple React calculator app that can perform basic arithmetic operations. Display the code and render the output as an interactive artifact." Up next, is our first game. This time we're asking Claude to generate a simple 3x3 grid for a game of tic-tac-toe where the AI controls the other player. Again, you can follow up and have Claude use different color schemes, add grid options and even score tracking. The prompt: "Design a tic-tac-toe game using React. Include game logic for win conditions and ties, 3x3 grid and a second player controlled by AI. Display the code and render the playable game as an artifact." I've been coding for years as a hobby and after "hello, world" the first application most people make is a simple to-do list. That is what we're going to ask of Claude and you can expand it by adding icons, gamification elements and even pre-set tasks. The prompt: "Develop a simple to-do list application using React. Include features to add, complete, and delete tasks. Show the code and render the interactive app as an artifact." A Pomodoro timer is a great way to keep track of a specific task and stay focused. Building one with Claude lets you add customizations, set durations and even your own topics. It could even be integrated with the to-do list application. The prompt: "Develop a React-based Pomodoro timer application. Include customizable work and break durations, a circular progress indicator, and audio notifications. Use efficient state management and hooks. Display the code and render the functional timer as an artifact." This next prompt will not give you Photoshop, so set your sights a little lower, but it will give you a simple drawing application with shapes and a save button. You could upgrade to include more colors, a wider range of shapes and even pen/canvas size options. The prompt: "Build a simple React-based drawing application. Include tools for freehand drawing, adding shapes, and changing colors. Implement an undo feature and the ability to save the drawing as an SVG. Display the code and render the usable drawing app as an artifact." Making a keyboard is on the more complex end of what Claude can do, but it is doable. Be prepared for it to be slightly disjointed or off-center. You can correct this by just asking Claude to make it better. You could also ask for more sounds and even a lesson guide. The prompt: "Design an interactive SVG-based piano keyboard using React. Create a one-octave keyboard that plays corresponding notes when keys are clicked. Include visual feedback for key presses. Display the code and render the playable piano as an artifact." Finally a fun diversion. If you've ever spent more time customizing an avatar for a game than playing one (or, for those who remember it, building your Mii for the Nintendo Wii) then you'll enjoy this prompt. Again, you can upgrade it by asking for more features, colors, and styles. The prompt: "Develop a React component for a customizable avatar creator. Include options for face shape, eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. Use SVG for the avatar parts. Show the code and render the interactive avatar creator as an artifact."

Why Claude's Artifacts is the coolest feature I've seen in generative AI so far
The Artifacts feature is now available to all Claude users across the Free, Pro, and Team plans - on desktop and mobile. Here's how it works and why it's such a game-changer. You can ask any of today's AI chatbots to help you design a web page, work with code, or write a report. But then you typically have to copy and paste the results into a separate program or file to see how they look, return to your conversation to tweak your request, and then keep going back and forth. How clumsy is that? Also: How to use Claude (and how it's different from ChatGPT) Now, Claude AI's new capability aims to streamline that process. With its newly built-in Artifacts feature, Claude AI can create and display the fully formatted results of your request in real time and side-by-side with your conversation. Launched as a web-based preview in June, the Artifacts feature is now fully baked and available to all Claude users across the Free, Pro, and Team plans. You can also tap into Artifacts not only on the Claude website but in the iOS and Android apps. "Artifacts turn conversations with Claude into a more creative and collaborative experience," Claude AI developer Anthropic announced on Tuesday. "With Artifacts, you have a dedicated window to instantly see, iterate, and build on the work you create with Claude. A few examples cited by Anthropic include: Probably the best way to appreciate the power of Artifacts is to use the example of webpage creation. Let's say you want to generate a webpage based on a certain theme and description. Head to the Claude AI website or fire up the iOS or Android app. At the prompt, type your request, such as "Create a webpage about London with space for photos and maps and a numbered list of the top ten places to visit." In response, Claude generates the necessary HTML and CSS code and then displays the formatted webpage so you can see how it looks. The generated page appears next to your chat so you can view and work with everything on the same screen. Need to tweak the results? Just submit another request, and Claude will modify the page with the new information. In my example, I told Claude to add a description to each of the top ten places, and it regenerated the page with that in mind. I had to work with the AI for some time to get it to replace the image placeholders with royalty-free pictures and add an actual interactive map based on any free mapping API. So, as with any AI, you'll likely have to work with your original code or text to fine-tune the results. But seeing the results appear in real time makes the process quick, simple, and satisfying. In the case of a webpage, you can easily switch between the raw HTML code and the finished page. You can also directly modify the HTML and CSS if you need to manually adjust the code. When done, you can publish your creation on Anthropic's Artifacts website where you and other people can check it out. I've seen a host of developments in generative AI over the past couple of years. Some excited me, while others left me feeling blah. But Claude's new Artifacts feature is one of the first to inspire me to say: "Wow, that's really cool."

Claude AI got a major ChatGPT-beating upgrade - here's how to use Artifacts
Starting today all Claude.ai users - whether you pay for the service or enjoy it for free - can create and view Artifacts across the website, as well as Android and iOS apps, and it's an upgrade ChatGPT is sorely lacking. To catch you up to speed on this AI bot, Claude is a ChatGPT rival from Anthropic with similar features - such as being able to be prompted by text, files, and images, or a combination of the three. However, beyond privacy it doesn't have much that truly sets it apart from the big-name AI - which is perhaps why Claude on iOS saw 157,000 total global downloads in its first week compared with ChatGPT's 480,000 downloads in its first five days (via TechCrunch). This is where Artifacts could lend a hand in helping Claude finally stand out. As explained by Anthropic in a blog post Artifacts turn conversations with its AI into a more 'collaborative experience.' With Artifacts turned on Claude will open a separate window that shows you the project it's helping to create next to your prompts allowing you to see in real-time what your tweaks and edits look like without needing a third-party tool. To turn on Artifacts, simply navigate to your Claude.AI Profile Settings by clicking on your initials in the lower left corner of the screen, then tap Settings, and then toggle on (or off) the 'Enable Artifacts' option. When you're next using Claude it can start to generate Artifacts though there are some restrictions - such as the content needing to be "significant and self-contained" which Anthropic says is typically "over 15 lines of content." Examples shown off in the Artifacts announcement video (shown above) include seeing a draft version of a website, or digital games like a virtual Rubik's Cube. If you see any features you'd like to tweak you can alter your prompts and see how they affect what you're working on in real time. That's not offered by ChatGPT, and makes the process of iterating an idea with an AI (especially on mobile) a much more straightforward task. With the rollout of Artifacts users on the Free and Pro plans can also choose to publish their Artifacts, which other users can subsequently remix - altering what others have made to suit their own ideas. Team plan users can share Artifacts too, but only with their teammates. This kind of collaborative AI design process is also something we've not really seen before, and we're excited to see if Artifacts live up to Anthropic's hype. Nevertheless, coupled with its emphasis on privacy, Claude is shaping up to be a proper ChatGPT rival rather than a mere clone. We'll have to watch this space but if you've been having issues with OpenAI's bot and want to try something new, Claude could be the bot you need.
