You Can Now Use AI to Create Playlists on Spotify

You may have noticed generative artificial intelligence making its way into one or two apps and gadgets in recent times, and you can now use the tech to create new playlists in Spotify: The AI Playlist feature is now live in the U.S. on Android and iOS, after testing in the UK and Australia, though you do need to be a Premium subscriber to get access to it. This works in the same way as AI text and image chatbots, in that you come up with your own text prompt that forms the basis of a new playlist -- it might be "songs for a wistful mood" or "songs for a birthday party with a bunch of 5-year-olds." Here's how to get started with the feature, plus some old-school music discovery ideas that might work better. This new Spotify feature is another reminder that the term "AI" is a broad one. The algorithms that already power your recommended playlists in Spotify also rely on artificial intelligence of a different type -- but this new AI Playlist tool takes the idea up a notch. Instead of just seeing songs linked to the music you currently listen to and like, you can be much more specific about what you want. "The more specific you can be, the better," Spotify says. "The most successful playlists are generated with prompts that contain a mix of genres, moods, artists, or decades, so get creative! You can also reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis." That gives you a lot of scope to work with. However, there are some guardrails in place: You're not able to create prompts using references to brand names or current events. There are also safeguards in place to cut out offensive prompts, so it's probably not a great idea to try and test the boundaries of decency with this new tool. Assuming you're a Spotify Premium user, open up the app on Android or iOS, then go to the Your Library tab. Tap the + (plus) button in the top right corner, and pick AI Playlist from the menu that pops up. Now you have to get creative: Describe what you want from your new playlist with as much detail as you can. You can base it around moods, events, genres, your favorite artists, a time of day, an activity, or whatever you like. You'll also see some suggestions above the text entry box, which you can use if you're not getting any inspiration for your own prompts. Swipe left to see more recommendations -- you'll see you're able to limit your playlists to a particular duration or to a particular decade of music, for example, which then might give you more ideas about how to generate your own custom playlists. Submit your prompt, and a playlist appears. You can refine it further using the prompt box at the bottom of the screen, tap on any song to hear a preview clip of it, or swipe left on a song to remove it from the list. When you're ready to accept the list of songs you've been given, tap Create to save it. Based on my limited time testing the AI Playlist feature, the underlying algorithms don't seem to be too different to those deployed across the rest of Spotify (when you ask it to automatically fill in a playlist, for example). Mention "indie rock," and you'll get a lot of the same songs as you would with a general search. However, the text prompt interface gives you more flexibility when building a playlist. This is AI, so of course there are misfires (Spotify has stuck a "beta" label on it too). When asked for "songs like R.E.M. that aren't R.E.M.," the AI returned -- you guessed it -- a playlist that included some R.E.M. tracks. Some refining is often required, as is usually the case when producing text or images with generative AI, and the ability to add to prompts can be useful. It seems that AI Playlist does take your previous listening history into account when making playlists, and it will mix in songs you've heard before with tracks that are popular elsewhere. The prompt "upbeat songs for a long winter drive" returned tunes from artists including Future Islands, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, and the 1975 -- so a mix of stuff I've already heard and stuff I haven't. This is certainly an interesting idea, and even if the playlists aren't massively different from what you can already find by digging through the recommendations on Spotify, it's fun to play around with certain ideas: Prompts like "songs to help me forget the past" or "the perfect playlist for gazing out across a rainy cityscape," for example (the latter returned Bon Iver, Tracy Chapman, and Radiohead, by the way). As with much of AI, how this actually works isn't clear, but I can't help feeling a little turned off by algorithm-based, AI recommendations in general. They're based on a lot of data points, sure, but they can often lack the serendipitous or left-field discoveries that used to come from picking up a music magazine, flicking through music video channels, or getting mixtapes made by friends. Personally, I still prefer the old ways of discovering music, including reading album reviews and band interviews, and tapping friends for recommendations (the Blend feature in Spotify is actually really good for this). Or, to give another recent example, checking out bands that are supporting bands I already like -- a choice curated by human beings and their tastes, which often leads to some new favorites.

In a blog post the music streaming giant recommends subscribers stick to "genre," "mood" or "artist" prompts to generate the most successful playlists, but it stipulates that anything from movie characters to emojis can be used. Examples include, "Upbeat folk music for a scenic fall road trip," and "2000 era hype jams for the tailgate." While some users might like not having to painstakingly curate their playlists, as Spotify leans further into AI, users stray further from their own unique taste. Instead of picking out the upbeat folk music that reminds you of fall memories or songs a trusted friend played for you, the AI Playlist tool encourages you to take a passive role in your listening, turning AI into a tastemaker. Previously, if you opted out of making your own playlist, you might search on the platform for a tailgate playlist made by another human user. Now, Spotify wants an algorithm to do it for you. While you can still opt to make your playlists or listen to other user-generated playlists, the more "personalization" features Spotify launches, the less intuitive that behavior becomes. It's a bit like that, only you write about your ideal playlist, and Spotify's AI playlist bot scours the service for music that fits the bill, forming a slick playlist just for you. The feature is still in beta at the moment, but accessing it is super easy, particularly if you follow Spotify's steps in the image below. But is it any good? It's... it's certainly a thing. Its definitions of certain genre terms are definitely slightly out. Let's make an example. I love heavy music: And I mean heavy music. Crushing, obliterating -- those are the kinds of words I use to describe my favorite music. So when I asked the AI playlist maker to create a playlist of "the heaviest music imaginable", that's exactly what I was hoping for. If you look below, it didn't deliver. Now, you can refine the playlist -- so I did. "No, heavier". And, sure enough, rather than baby's first heavy music (sorry, Slipknot fans), it spat out some hardcore and called it a day. But I want more. I want music that feels like there's a grindstone around my neck, and I'm being made to do manual labour. Like I'm being physically assualted by the musicians. "HEAVIER". Sure enough, this time I got what I wanted -- heavy music from the depths, Celtic Frost, Dragged into the Sunlight. The kind of music most people balk at. Excellent. Now my example is about as niche as niche could be, but it highlights that you need to work with the playlist builder a little to get what you really want. Of course, if you just want something to chill out with while you and your friends have a barbeque, then typing in "chill, family-friendly summer barbeque vibes" gives you a suitable playlist to grill meat to. Look, I'm actually a terrible example of someone to try out the AI playlist builder. I like to carefully construct my playlists until I've an hours-long monstrosity filled with music that suits that specific mood or title. To me, playlist building is an art -- and, like a picture of a nice view, I'd rather a person make it rather than a learning AI model. But that's just me. For everyone else, the playlist maker could be quite a lot of fun, and actually quite useful. If you've got a party coming up, a chill session with your old high school friends, or even a wedding (and you want to save money on increasingly expensive DJs), then you could get some use out of it. Just bear in mind (particularly you, wedding people) that a person doing it is going to do a much better job. It's a nice addition to Spotify's slate of AI features, slotting perfectly next to the likes of the AI DJ that tells you what's coming next when you let a playlist or album play out and the 'what's next' algorithm takes over. Neither feature is going to pull me back to your service though Spotify -- not until you give me my Spotify HiFi.

Said interpretation doesn't always go down all that well, and from what we've seen thus far, the AI does tend to play it safe (selecting songs you've listened to, or more commercial offerings as opposed to left-field artists). That makes sense in some ways, but may disappoint some listeners after more obscure tunes. If you're really lazy and can't even be bothered to think of a query for the AI to work off, there are suggested prompts provided by Spotify, too. As already noted, the feature is still in beta, so some roughness around the edges is only to be expected. As Spotify tells us: "While AI Playlist is designed to be fun, this feature is still in beta and won't produce results for non-music-related prompts, like current events or specific brands. We also have measures in place around prompts that are offensive, so please prompt responsibly." One of the issues I've encountered with Apple's own 'Made for You' playlists, and its curated editorial playlists, is that they're often not quite what I'm looking for. But if I can type a request and have Apple Intelligence make a playlist for me -- which can then be further refined with more input -- that sounds like a killer feature for Apple Music. You can use words, numbers, or emojis, but Spotify won't allow offensive words. It also suggests when you're first playing around with this feature, be specific - potentially with a genre, location, or even characters. As with any AI, specifically a chatbot, which is close to what this is, results will vary, and Spotify is quick to repeat that AI Playlist is in beta. Considering Spotify is already pretty spot on with music recommendations, adding in this level of customization and personalization via AI is a cool feature that we're eager to try out. It's rolling out now in English for Premium subscribers in United States, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand now after being available for several months in the UK and Australia. Spotify rolls out AI playlist tool to more countries including Ireland

Starting today (24 September), Spotify premium users in Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the US can use a new AI feature that allows users to create personalised playlists using text prompts. This feature, which is in beta on Android and iOS devices, was initially made available in the UK and Australia earlier this year. The AI playlist combines Spotify's personalisation technology with generative AI and eligible users can access the feature by selecting the 'Your Library' tab on the bottom right corner of the screen and then by pressing the '+' icon on the top right. Users can enter in text prompts like "something for a lazy Sunday indoors" or "getting ready with the girls for a party", which the AI will then use to curate playlists that fit the descriptions of the prompts. Spotify said users will also be able to "revise and refine" the playlists generated by typing in further prompts with extra specifications, such as "more R&B" or "slower". However, the feature won't produce results for non-music-related prompts such as current events or specific brands. The platform also said that it has "measures in place around prompts that are offensive", advising users to "prompt responsibly". According to Spotify, its earlier AI roll-out in the UK and Australia was a success, with the streaming platform claiming that millions of playlists have been created so far. In 2023, the streaming service introduced two features using OpenAI technology - a podcast translator that matches the speaker's voice in different languages starting with Spanish, French and German, and an AI-powered DJ that suggests music and provides commentary. Last year, the streaming platform also got a little pricier in 53 countries including Ireland, as the monthly charge for a single Spotify premium subscription rose from €9.99 a month to €10.99 a month, while the duo subscription also rose by €1 to €14.99 a month.
