Overview Google's AI Overview came under fire for pulling information from unreliable websites and resulting in dangerous recommendations. The latest Google Search statistics show a significant drop in the appearance of AI Overview in search results, especially in education and ecommerce searches. Google has significantly reduced the tool's reliance on websites like Quora and Reddit by more than 99% after Overviews generated using comments from these websites recommended risky behaviors like glue sticking and eating rocks.
Google announced the AI Overviews feature earlier this year for all U.S. users at its annual I/O developer conference, where the word "AI" was used more than 120 times onstage. The feature, which displays a consolidated summary of search results in a friendly (some might say not) panel at the top of the search page, was not immediately well received.
A week after the feature's release, to users' dismay, Google announced that AI Overview would soon include sponsored ads, but that wasn't the worst part.
Soon after its launch, users began noticing that the AI feature was spitting out nonsensical and often dangerous search results, like suggesting users put glue on their pizza or eat stones.

The tech giant was quickly forced to switch into damage control mode, saying the feature was getting answers to some users' questions from satirical articles and Reddit comments, which led to dangerous recommendations like adding glue to pizza. It then added measures to stop the feature from picking up nonsensical information, and it seemed to work for a while, but then it started recommending adding glue to pizza again, this time citing trusted sources that had reported on the AI feature's initial blunder.
Since then, Google appears to have reduced the visibility of AI Overviews, and the statistics back that up.

Google can't seem to escape its pizza glue fiasco
According to a new Search Engine Land report highlighting statistics shared by BrightEdge, users are actually seeing fewer AI overview summaries overall, dropping from 15% of all searches in May to 7% as of July. Three major categories saw the biggest declines: education queries (where AI overviews fell from 26% to 13%), e-commerce queries (where AI overviews fell from 26% to 9%), and entertainment-related queries (where AI overviews fell to 0%).
Summary, if displayed, is said to be shorter than before and take up less screen space.

One thing Google learned from the pizza glue fiasco is that summaries need to ensure credibility, so citations from sources like Reddit and Quora took a big hit. This means that user-generated suggestions are much less likely, with around 85.71% and 99.69% less likely for information cited from Reddit and Quora, respectively.
The report also highlighted an increase in summaries appearing for more specific searches using keywords like "best," "what," and "how." AI features also reported an increase in financial alerts in general and a decrease in listings, comparisons, product viewers, and carousels.
With constant changes, it seems like the AI Summary feature isn't going away anytime soon, and Google is working to ensure it's delivered in a way that makes factual information easily accessible. While Summary may be useful in some situations, today's smart searchers already know what they're looking for and how to access it, so Summary feels like a speed bump that forces them to scroll before they can get to the actual information.
