I believe there are two things every digital nomad needs: a good hotspot and streamlined productivity, so I wanted to bring another artificial intelligence tool to my writing-focused work, specifically one named after my personal favorite self-study tool.
On December 6, 2023, just under eight months after the release of OpenAI's GPT-4, Google Workspace welcomed its new AI-powered assistant, Gemini, into the digital world.
Though the name doesn't correspond to its launch date (in fact, the tool was originally called something else, Bard), Gemini is named after the dual nature of this astrological symbol - its ability to see things from multiple perspectives while adapting quickly and connecting with a wide range of people.
Gemini's new name came about because "we wanted to bring the teams working on language modeling closer together," said Gemini co-technical lead Jeff Dean.
Because I own a business domain through Google Workspace, I got 14 days of Gemini for free. After the free trial, I got 30% off the monthly price ($16.80) for three months, after which the monthly price increased to $24. You can read CNET's full hands-on review of Gemini here. During those two short weeks, I had the opportunity to interact with the "Help me write" prompt and get text suggestions based on what I typed into the text screen, including drafting a blog post, helping me write song lyrics, and rewriting my original text to adjust the tone or make it more concise.
You can also use Gemini with Google Docs to summarize and create images for files in Google Drive and emails in Gmail.
For now, we're focusing on summarizing in Google Docs. To learn how to get even more out of AI, check out our articles on how to use the AI-powered Grammarly to do all your editing for you and how to use Zoom AI as your next project manager.
How to use AI to summarize Google Docs
Step 1: Open your document in Google Docs and highlight and select the text you want to summarize in Gemini.
Step 2: To the right of the selected text, click[Help me write]Click and select what you want to implement from the drop-down menu:[Summarize]In addition to,[Tone],[Bulletize],[Elaborate],[Shorten],[Rephrase],or[Custom]You have the option to write your own prompt.
Step 3:[要約]Click to see the results Gemini returns. Understand the document and double-check what was important (and make sure the AI tool isn't hallucinating).
Step 4: An interesting feature added to Google Docs is the ability to provide feedback on the generated text. After creating your summary, you can check whether the suggestions Gemini gave you are good or bad, edit the prompt to update and regenerate the text, or create a new version of the previously created text and click retry.

To turn off the AI-powered "Help me write" prompts, you must exit Workspace Labs. Once you do, you will "permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features and will not be able to rejoin Workspace Labs." Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs here.
Should I use Google Workspace Gemini?
Gemini calls its AI writing tool a "useful and fascinating resource" for people who enjoy finding patterns and connections.
I agree - I decided to adopt Google Workspace Gemini because I wanted to speed up and streamline my writing process, and because it seamlessly integrated with all the other Google products I use on a regular basis, I decided to purchase a monthly Gemini membership.
And I agree with the AI-powered conclusion: Gemini is a valuable asset for anyone looking to increase their productivity and creativity, and especially for those looking for solutions to productivity and creativity problems with small budgets and/or teams.
This AI addition to my digital toolbox really helps navigate the most efficient route for composing emails and documents.
