How did I find out? They had all made headlines for a lawsuit targeting AI-generated imagery and over 4,000 artists' work used to train the companies' AI machines. Founded two years prior by serial entrepreneur David Holz, Midjourney was one of the earlier tools to tap into visual output created by artificial intelligence. Yet, the (negative buzz around these companies was what ended up piquing my interest about the ways AI could enhance or support my creativity. (Though legally would be better.) I began to look into how I could make a logo for my business through Midjourney. To get started, you'll need a Discord account, which is free. I was originally introduced to Discord through community organizers who were also gamers, so it was interesting to see a creative AI tool being utilized through what I consider a more tech- and UX-driven version of Slack. Then you can access the Midjourney Bot through Discord via browser, mobile app or desktop app. While Discord is free, you'll need to subscribe to a Midjourney Subscription Plan to start generating images. Monthly prices start at $10, and you save 20% if you commit to an annual subscription plan. Step 2: Now you can interact with Midjourney Bot using a Command -- used to create images, change default settings and other tasks. Particularly, the /imagine command can create a unique image or logo in response to a prompt, which is a short text description of what kind of image you're seeking. The Midjourney Bot will interpret your description and produce an image in response. Heads up: You'll need to accept Midjourney's terms of service to proceed with image creation -- and be mindful to respect its community guidelines along the way. Step 3: After you submit a text prompt for Midjourney's image creation, it will create four unique image options in less than a minute. The image creation process utilizes GPUs (graphics processing units), which accumulate and are tracked with your Midjourney subscription. Each minute used to complete a job is considered a GPU Minute. If you run out, you can purchase more Fast Hours (which are used to generate images). To see your remaining time, type /info into Discord and look at Fast Time Remaining. Step 4: Time to get creative! Now you can select one of the four images created, or generate more variations from what Midjourney produces. Images are immediately generated at 1,024x1,024 pixels size.You can also Re-Run or Re-Roll the prompt and produce a new grid of images. Step 5: Once you've singled out an image from your set, various options become available, including creating a Strong or Subtle Variation of your selected image. Zoom, Pan, Favorite or Web, which opens the image up in your gallery on Midjourney's website. Step 6: Now that you've produced, refined and created your final image, you can save it by opening the image in full view, then right-click and choose Save Image. On Mobile, long-tap the image and then click the Download icon in the top right corner. Other tools to check out within Midjourney are its one-on-one direct messaging capabilities, tips and tricks for writing prompts and how to use the /blend command when creating images. With all AI-generated images, there's a sense of surrealism that doesn't necessarily align with my vision for a business logo. I think Midjourney has a better chance of being a stock photo substitute rather than a system for churning out creative business logos. Since it's connected to Discord, which originated as a gaming communication platform, my take is that Midjourney's AI-created images fit into more of a gamer's fantastical land than an entrepreneur's need for brand identity, but perhaps that is its intention. I'm a huge advocate for using AI to increase efficiency and productivity. However, this specific AI tool isn't for me, nor do I think any designers have to worry about Midjourney replacing them in the creative workforce. Still undecided? Ideogram dropped version 2 of its powerful AI image generation model last week, and one of the stand-out features is its ability to not only render text but do so in a creative way. With the new model release, Ideogram cements its place among the list of best AI image generators, adding impressive design capabilities and better prompt adherence. This means it is easier to get an image that looks exactly as you've described. Having already put Ideogram to the test along with other AI image editors, I decided to see how the new version stacks up as a standalone design tool. I gave Ideogram 2 a series of tasks to see how much control I could get simply from text prompts with no additional edits or control. I've found the more descriptive you can be with Ideogram 2 the better. Sometimes this includes a descriptive identifier such as "headline" "subheadline" and "call to action" as this helped better direct where certain text elements should be placed on the image. You can also define font family, color scheme and any icons or styles you want included in the image, and for the most part, Ideogram will do this. You can also define color scheme independently in the Ideogram generation menu. I'm starting with something very simple, a poster about revolutionizing graphic design using AI. This is the concept of the article, so seemed a good way to start. The prompt: Headline: "AI: Your New Creative Partner" Subheadline: "Revolutionizing Graphic Design" Call to Action: "Try It Now" Design elements: Gradient background from light blue to soft purple Animated pulsing effect around the AI "brain" icon Floating geometric shapes in the background Next, a look back and forward. Here I wanted a darker design with a circuit board pattern and particle effect for a poster about AI design. The prompt: Headline: "From Pixels to Masterpieces" Subheadline: "AI-Powered Design Evolution" Footer: "The Future of Creativity is Here" Design elements: Dark background with a subtle circuit board pattern Glowing lines connecting the transforming shapes Particle effect simulating digital "dust" For this design, we're drawing on a color pallet idea but baked into harmonies. I wanted to see how it handled a disclaimer and a subtle gradient. The prompt: Headline: "Infinite Palettes at Your Fingertips" Subheadline: "AI-Generated Color Harmonies" Disclaimer: "Colors may vary based on screen settings" Design elements: Circular color wheel backdrop Animated color droplets falling from the AI chip Subtle rainbow gradient on text Typography is one of the most important elements of design. Here, I had the AI build on this and try to utilize different font styles. The prompt: Headline: "Words Come Alive with AI" Subheadline: "Dynamic Text Styling" Footer: "Powered by Advanced Language Models" Design elements: Letterpress texture on the transforming text Flowing lines representing AI processing Minimal icons of different font styles The next design had to include a call to action, an aura around hands and a pattern background. It also needed to include a head and subhead. The prompt: Headline: "Human Creativity + AI Precision" Subheadline: "The Perfect Design Partnership" Call to Action: "Start Collaborating Today" Design elements: Halftone pattern background Glowing aura where the hands meet Tiny icons representing various design tools floating around I took a completely new direction here, seeing what I could achieve with a more conversational prompt style, asking for a cookbook cover with a specific title in quotes and then giving some descriptive terms. The prompt: A retro-futuristic cookbook cover: "Binary Bites" "Culinary creations from the AI chef" "100% bug-free recipes!" Feature a 1950s-style robot in a chef's hat, surrounded by impossible food combinations like pizza-tacos and sushi-burgers. Finally another conversation prompt. Here we're creating a banner for a new sport set in space. I used descriptive terms for the imagery and put the words in quotes. The prompt: A fictional extreme sports event banner: "GRAVITY GLADIATORS" "Defy Physics, Define Legends" "Zero-G Championship 2025" "Watch Live from Earth or Lunar Colony" Design with dynamic figures performing impossible stunts in a futuristic zero-gravity arena, with Earth and the Moon visible in the background. Ideogram 2 is a huge step up in AI-powered design, capable of creating stunning font, color and design combinations that look like they were created by a human designer. It makes good choices with accurate text rendering for the most part. However, as much as I love the way Ideogram 2 works, it isn't yet a replacement for tools like Canva, Sketch or Illustrator. And it won't be until you can specifically edit individual elements within the generated image or easily change fonts and icons. That said, if what you're looking for is a quick flyer for a yard sale, a birthday card or a poster saying "wash your hands" for the bathroom and you want it to look professionally designed, Ideogram could be exactly what you need.

Last year, Canadian startup Ideogram launched an AI image generation service - with a twist. The team was determined to include text in the AI image mix, something which every other platform struggles with. What's interesting is how well they've succeeded. For the first time, designers, and those with more of an eye on typography, could use an AI tool to produce something grown up and sophisticated. Text was no longer taboo. A quick look at the home page spells it out. Where many of the best AI image generators we've reviewed offer cutesy anime and fantasy style images in their carousels, Ideogram shows off gorgeous high resolution images with a strong typeset integration. It's a subtle but important distinction, and opens up whole new design areas such as logos, humor or other image uses which have previously been off limits for conventional AI platforms. Of course the market is changing all the time, and already there are alternatives like Stable Diffusion 3 waiting in the wings, but for now Ideogram still holds the AI text crown. The speed varies according to the load on the service, but in my testing it was around 30 to 45 seconds or so, which is not too terrible. The free plan also provides access to the community image gallery, the use of the Describe tool and 70% quality JPG image file downloads. The Paid plans start at $8 a month for the Basic plan which gives 400 prompts a month, a basic image editor, high quality 2K image upscaling and 100% quality image downloads. Plus and Pro plan users can also keep their images private and away from the public gallery, and upload their own images to rework. Paying users also get to create seamless repeating Tile patterns, which is a boon for design work like texture or background creation. The first surprise when you land on the Ideogram front page, is how bare it is. Unlike other AI image generators, there's no browsing here until you sign up or log in to an account. It's quite disconcerting, and probably deters a fair number of potential users. There are two clicks you can make, either a help ? icon or an Apple or Google account login button. There's not even basic email registration. Mandating a login restricts access to the user community images which are available on the main page, and there's a simple reason for this gatekeeping. You see there are two very useful tools anyone can use once logged in to get started. The first is to click on the three dot menu under any image to copy and use the prompt which made it. The second more powerful method is to click the same menu but this time select the Describe option. This gives you a full blown 'magic' prompt created by the service which delivers the ultimate quality image from your basic prompt. For example, I grabbed a prompt which read: "a dog's head in profile with a double exposure of a forest and Dalmatians playing in the background." The 'magic' feature upgraded that basic copied prompt to: "a close-up of a dog's face, predominantly in shades of brown and white. The background is a blend of a dense forest and a clearing where two Dalmatians are seen playing in the grass. The juxtaposition of the dog's head with the forest and Dalmatians creates a surreal effect, as if the dog is emerging from the woods or merging with them." Result: a vastly improved image result, which uses the power of the crowd along with some AI smarts to produce a nice looking image. It's not perfect, but it's a great start to iterate on. The above example points to one of the key benefits of using Ideogram over some of the best AI art generators and image generators that have sprung up over the last couple of years. The platform really wants to help users get the best out of their image generation credits. Even those on the free plan can benefit from these features, although you'll have to upgrade to a paid plan to edit, upscale or download 100% quality images when you're done. Proper prompting can be extremely tricky for non-experts, so being able to use the front page community images as a start point is very powerful. Creating a Remix of a sample image is also a great way to produce something quickly and easily, based on an existing user image. It sounds like cheating, but paid plan users have the power to keep their images private, so there is a choice of access. In general, creating lush, beautiful images with Ideogram is fast and painless. The addition of the 'Magic' prompt function, although it's not unique to Ideogram, is an excellent way to minimize user disappointment through bad prompting. The new upscaling function is also a powerful method of delivering professional quality images which can be used in commercial settings such as advertising and marketing. The image results may not match the consistent and coherent quality of Midjourney, but it's not far off. Where the platform falls a little short is in the editing area. There's no outpainting or inpainting functions, so the editing is limited to crop, zoom, color selection and changing aspect ratio. The most valuable editing function is to draw text positions on a generated image and use an updated prompt and Remix to add the actual text to the result. This is extremely useful for adding or adjusting precise text, as you might need when designing a logo or other brand element. It's just a shame that there's not a larger selection of image editing tools on the platform, as there is with other services. Ideogram combines top quality AI image generation with superb typographic control. In that regard it is unique among its peers. The image quality at its best matches anything on the market, even if the editing features are a little weak in places.
