How to Use the Booking.com AI Trip Planner
Amanda Smith is a freelance journalist and writer. She reports on culture, society, human interest and technology. Her stories hold a mirror to society, reflecting both its malaise and its beauty. Amanda's work has been published in National Geographic, The Guardian, Business Insider, Vice, News Corp, Singapore Airlines, Travel + Leisure, and Food & Wine. Amanda is an Australian living in the cultural center of gravity that is New York City. The fun of traveling doesn't start when you board the plane. The journey actually begins during the planning process, where anticipation and adventure awaits. Scoping out destinations on your bucket list, comparing prices and best times to travel, planning an itinerary and getting personalized recommendations is all possible with artificial intelligence. As seen in a Super Bowl ad this week starring The Muppets, Booking.com's AI Trip Planner is like having a travel agent at your fingertips. It can help with research, analyzing reviews and providing tailored trip suggestions. It can even help you work out the big questions, like: "Should I spend a month in the Mediterranean or backpack around Bali?" The Booking.com AI Trip Planner uses a combination of the platform's existing machine-learning models (such as GenAI Orchestrator) and OpenAI's ChatGPT API. The planner launched in June 2023 but has had various updates since its release. It has evolved from answering general questions to now being able to give you very specific, personalized advice. The AI Trip Planner is free to use and available via the Booking.com mobile app. If you use Booking.com or have in the past, sign into your account on the app. This way, AI Trip Planner can access your past searches and travel history. Here are the first few steps: You can use the AI travel agent to either inspire a future trip or help plan something that's in the works. What's cool about using a chatbot for trip planning is you can prompt it with your wants, needs and budget, just like a human travel agent uses what they know about their clients to match suitable destination, hotel and flight options. As with all AI tools, be wary not to outsource important decisions to these models. The Booking.com AI Trip Planner is still in beta mode, meaning it's still in its early days and could be prone to mistakes. Think of these tools as add-ons to your trip planning, not your only source of information -- at least until they mature. Let's test out a couple of possible trips: Start with a prompt like this: "I want to travel to Paris for a week between June-August. I will be visiting with my wife. We prefer to stay outside of the tourist traps but still have easy access to attractions. We love coffee, food, people-watching and wandering by foot. I've already been to Paris twice, but my wife has never been. Can you provide the best flight prices from Newark/New York and accommodation options around $150 USD per night?" It came back with some information and hotel options. I responded with extra context around our accommodation preferences -- more boutique hotel listings with a minimum of an 8-star rating. While I've had my fair share of hostel stays, you couldn't pay me to stay in a dorm these days. It came back with a luxury hotel option of $1,817 per night. My heart says yes but my wallet says no. I liked how it provided a few alternatives that either had high ratings or were close to my nightly budget. I clicked on each one to check out the photos and location. I quickly fell in love with the most expensive one (not surprised), on the opposite side of the river to the Louvre. Oui, Oui! Once you select a hotel, you can ask property-specific questions. Just click on "Ask a question" in the hotel card. I asked if the hotel I like is too close to all the tourists and what's special about the location. Here's what the AI Trip Planner said: Because I'm a professional people-watcher, I asked which Parisian café I should try first. It gave me five suggestions, with descriptions on what they each feature and serve. Again, do your independent research, because I ran a Google search on one of these cafés and it's temporarily closed. The property-specific questions is by far the coolest feature of the Booking.com AI Trip Planner. You can get really granular with your search. Now, let's start a new chat for a new trip. You can also use the AI Trip Planner to give you destination ideas. For example, "What are some good winter destinations in the US to go skiing for a week? A budget, family-friendly trip for four." It gave me some options, so I followed up with a note about wanting a destination that was convenient to reach from New York, and it came back with Killington, Park City and Vail. It also explained why these are good locations for ski trips, noting the family-friendly activities, cultural experiences, ski terrain and downtown areas. It's good to ask follow-up questions in the chat, like "Where is Killington?" or "Where is the best place to ski on the east coast?" Killington kept coming up so I asked it to create a customized itinerary, including places to stay and good restaurants. You can adjust what you don't like, then have it generate a new itinerary. For example, my first one was generic, so I asked it to be specific about the restaurants to visit and activities to do. It's an iterative but enjoyable process for planning travel. Booking.com's AI Trip Planner is particularly unique because of the years of reviews and ratings on the platform that can be leveraged for fast results.

5 AI tools to explore and enjoy your vacation
Traveling is about seeing new places, learning new things and experiencing the unfamiliar -- and AI tools from Google can help with all of the above. Here are five AI-powered features you can use to make exploring while you're on vacation even better. Google Maps' Immersive View for routes uses AI to combine billions of Street View and aerial images, offering you a preview of your journey so you know what to expect before you head out. It can be super helpful for whatever kind of vacation you're on -- maybe you're working remotely while on a trip and want to go for a walk to a coffee shop; you can use Immersive View to find a pleasant walk complete with sidewalks to a cafe with Wi-Fi. If you're renting a car while on vacay and want to get an idea of what a drive will be like, you can use Immersive View to preview driving routes. Whatever it is you're doing, you can get visual turn-by-turn directions or you can even use the time slider to see what traffic and weather conditions will be like when you're heading out. Immersive View for routes is available in cities including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence and more. There's also Immersive View for places, which gives you the same super-accurate look at what a place is like -- so if you're visiting a new place and want to see a music venue or a museum, you can check out the area around the building. It's currently available in more than 70 cities worldwide including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo, Venice and more.

Travel startup Mindtrip's new feature lets you build an itinerary from a screenshot, YouTube or TikTok video | TechCrunch
AI travel agent startup Mindtrip on Tuesday released a feature that lets you save places or build an itinerary from several places around the web. Mindtrip lets you insert a link like a Reddit post or a blog, and ask the AI assistant to build an itinerary based on the places mentioned. You can also see these places on a map and easily save them to favorites or a trip list. You can also use a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link to populate the list of places mentioned in the video. Currently, the tool can only work with TikTok videos that have text overlays. For YouTube videos, the tool uses transcripts to show suggested places. You can even upload a screenshot of a ticket, or a list of cities you are visiting and ask Mindtrip's assistant to suggest places to visit, bars and restaurants. "People don't plan travel in a linear fashion, yet the travel industry continues to offer only platforms that do just that," CEO of Mindtrip, Andy Moss, said in a statement. "We've developed Start Anywhere to enable people everywhere to turn all of the incredible travel content online into something actionable." Now you have it. With reports showing that 75 percent of people find travel inspiration on social sites or online, we are excited to see what travelers do with this game-changing technology and how it will transform the way we all approach planning vacations." With this feature, Mindtrip is also starting a creator program, where creators can generate their own Mindtrip link and post it in their bios or along with their content. When someone clicks on that link, Mindtrip generates an itinerary based on the creator's content. Creators can also add their photos, videos, and recommendations directly to Mindtrip to better customize AI-generated itineraries. Mindtrip pays creators an unspecified amount for each registered user. The company said that creators can generate up to $10,000 per month through this program. The company said later this year, it plans to introduce a revenue-sharing program where creators will get a cut when a user places bookings through travel plans made by creators. Mindtrip, which has 12 experienced founders, raised $7 million from Costanoa Ventures last year. The company was one of the apps that OpenAI showed off on its dev day. While the product has been in beta testing for a while, Mindtrip made it available to users in May. The company said it uses proprietary knowledge of more than 6.5 million places mixed with OpenAI's tech for itinerary building. The company said it uses map, link, and picture overlays to provide better context for results. This year, the company will introduce a group chat feature for trip planning with family and friends and an iOS app.

How to use AI to plan your next vacation
I'm going to Europe soon, and planning my trip was a breeze. Yes, really! Artificial intelligence did a big chunk of the work for me - and it can help you plan your next getaway, too. Start here Here are a few ways to turn AI into your travel agent. There's a whole industry of paid sites and apps popping up, but I haven't found any that are useful enough to pay for. For this, let's stick with using the big bots: â—¾ ChatGPT: My preferred AI chatbot; gives the best results based on my testing. â—¾ Gemini: Google's chatbot is integrated into Google Flights and Google Hotels. I don't think it's as thorough as ChatGPT, and it often throws in weird opinions. 1. Describe your likes and wants Your AI travel buddy can do so much more than suggest tourist traps - it can help you create a truly tailored adventure. Remember, the more info you put in about who you are and what you like, the more "you" the suggestions will be. By interests AI can curate a list of spots that match your hobbies or those of the group you're traveling with: â—¾ "Find me the best food tours in Paris that include wine tastings." â—¾ "What are some scenic hiking trails within 30 miles of Denver?" â—¾ "Suggest must-see art galleries in NYC for modern art lovers." By weather AI can suggest destinations based on your preferred climate at any time of year. So much easier than looking up weather charts! â—¾ "Find me a warm destination in the U.S. for January with average temps above 70 degrees Fahrenheit." â—¾ "What are the best ski resorts in Wyoming for late December?" â—¾ "Where can I play golf in May with mild, spring-like weather?" By occasion or vibe Not sure where you want to go? Let AI find the perfect match for your mood. If you're not sure how to word the vibe you're looking for, tell AI how you want to feel on your trip. â—¾"What are some romantic destinations in Italy?" â—¾ "Suggest family-friendly vacation spots with amusement parks and beaches." â—¾ "Where can I go to feel relaxed and refreshed in March without spending a ton of money?" The best part? AI doesn't just offer generic lists; it crafts your dream trip based on what you love, need, or just want to experience. AI does more than just answer questions. It simplifies the whole planning process so you can focus on the fun part of travel. Flights and transportation AI can assist in finding the best flight times, routes and transportation options based on your budget and preferences. â—¾ "What's the most direct route from (origin) to (destination) with a layover under 2 hours?" â—¾ "Find me affordable train options from [city] to [city] with scenic views." â—¾ "Which airlines offer the best in-flight perks for long-haul flights?" Hotels and accommodations Get specific with your accommodation needs, and AI will help you sort through the options. It can do the hard work of sorting through reviews, amenities and locations for you. So sweet. â—¾ "What's a family-friendly hotel in (destination) with a pool and free breakfast?" â—¾ "Suggest eco-friendly accommodations near hiking trails in (region)." â—¾ "Find a cozy boutique hotel in (city) within walking distance of top-rated restaurants." This one hit the jackpot for me: "What are unique experiences in Berlin and Vienna during the first week of January?" The results? Festive Christmas markets, snowy countryside escapes and a hot springs spa. Not bad, right? For every city on my trip, I got creative with prompts: â—¾ "Help me plan a route between Paris and Vienna. My family loves unique experiences, scenic drives and amazing food." â—¾ "I'm visiting Berlin. What are the tourist things I shouldn't miss?" â—¾ "What's a day-by-day itinerary for Paris that includes local food, hidden gems and cultural must-sees?" Don't stop at the basics! Dig deeper and you'll have your travel buddies asking, "How'd you know about this?" â—¾ "What's an underrated restaurant where locals eat in (destination)?" â—¾ "Which festivals or seasonal events are happening in (destination) on (dates)?" â—¾ "What's the easiest way to save on tickets and/or skip the lines for (popular attraction)?" We've all forgotten our phone chargers or overpacked like we're moving abroad for a weekend trip. â—¾ Pack perfectly: "What should I pack for a (length of trip) to (destination) in (month)?" â—¾ Weatherproof your wardrobe: "What's the weather typically like in (destination) in (month)?" â—¾ Stay document-ready: "What documents do I need for (destination)?" This way, you're prepared for customs if you're leaving the country. (By the way, you can now renew your passport online.) Share this with your favorite travel buddy and start planning for your next getaway. Bon voyage!
