Apple Intelligence is here, but it still has a lot to learn

Apple uses AI to summarize groups of notifications so you can catch up on what you missed faster. You can summarize long emails and use a new focus mode that filters out unnecessary distractions. In practice, these things kind of work, though, after a week of using them, I don't feel like I saved much time or energy. In the Mail app, AI summaries appear where the first line of an email would normally show up when you're viewing an entire inbox; there's also an option to summarize individual emails. Maybe it's a reflection of how useless email has become, but I didn't find either of these features terribly helpful. You know what feature we already use that summarizes an email pretty well? The subject line. At least that's true of most emails I get; they're usually short and to the point. Maybe Tim Cook saves himself a lot of time reading long emails, but personally, I could live without a little summary of every email the DNC sends me asking for three dollars by midnight.

Canary Mail Uses AI to Tame Your Inbox. Here's How

Have you ever returned from a glorious stretch of PTO to an incredible amount of emails that are overwhelming your inbox... and your brain? To try and end the cyclical nature of doom and dread, I searched for a tool or application to support my digital-turned-mental state of clutter. Canary Mail offers an artificial intelligence-fueled email copilot, backed by ChatGPT maker OpenAI and enterprise AI company Cohere, in collaboration with the open-source language platform Hugging Face. Founded in 2015 by brothers Sohel Sanghani and Dev Sanghani, and backed by Sequoia Capital, the downloadable email assistant is available on Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. Named after the cautionary metaphor "canary in a coal mine," Canary Mail's main features include its ability to write emails, surface emails that need attention, silence spam and summarize email threads into list format, all while proactively alerting users to threats. (My inbox required all of the above.) Step 1: Once Canary Mail is downloaded to your phone or computer, click on the application and make an account. There's an option to upgrade your subscription to $3/month ($36/year) or to trial Canary Mail free for seven days. Step 2: A tutorial pops up next, with information on navigating the tool and using it to draft email responses with a certain context or tone. Step 3: Click on the "write email" button, which will pull up your inbox, now integrated within the Canary Mail app. (A welcome email from the company arrives shortly afterward.) Step 4: Your inbox will take on a slightly different look. In response to my MacOS download and integration, my inbox is separated by labels on the left-hand side of the screen: All, For You, Team and Needs Reply. Step 5: On the right-hand side, there's an Alerts area and an AI-powered assistant below it for action-oriented prompts. Regardless of their label, all emails have an AI Summarization option available. I found this helpful for lengthy threads and their equally lengthy processes. The summarization is visible once you navigate to the thread, which serves as a project status reminder without you sifting through your inbox. Any email under Needs Reply will provide AI-generated responses in line with the thread's context and tone, labeled as Quick Reply. The organizational style of Canary Mail allows for additional interactions within each thread; you can like or save contacts' information extracted from the email, use AI to reply to an Alert, or navigate to the top of the app and select Bulk Clean to identify unimportant emails. Plus, Canary Mail features its own text formatting editor, for text style, color and alignment customization. Each message thread mimics Apple's "dark mode," and you can also snooze or pin emails, similar to iOS' Messaging interface. Canary Mail is one of the oldest email options offering AI-powered assistants and copilots; it launched in 2016 after competitors Superhuman and Proton Mail. (Its shift toward AI is fairly recent, following a collaboration with OpenAI in 2023.) Other competitors include Spark (2015), Shortwave (2022), Gemini for Gmail (2023), and Proton Scribe (2024). Canary Mail is also the cheapest, particularly compared to those that don't offer a free trial. Its privacy-minded security commitment may be what makes it particularly appealing. To protect user privacy, Canary Mail contains a multilayered AI-powered threat detection and a threat analysis system designed to block data infiltration and phishing attempts. It also offers end-to-end encryption and control over who can access your email metadata. Alongside its ability to integrate with Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, iCloud and AOL, Canary Mail can provide a digital reprieve when you're navigating that torrent of emails, and the percentage of those that are spam or a potential threat. It's something to consider before you head out on your next much-needed PTO.

How AI Can Summarize a YouTube Video for You

We all may have a friend -- or are that friend -- whose belabored stories could use a summary to help capture their main parts before people get impatient and dream of skipping through. In the digital world, that's the sort of thing Eightify is designed for. It's an artificial intelligence tool made as a Google Chrome desktop extension and an app for the iPhone and Android. Eightify summarizes YouTube videos to save viewers time -- specifically when folks are navigating longer videos or lengthy forms of educational content. Launched in 2022 by Dmytro Tymoshenko, Eightify can pull digestible key points and highlights out of video content. After a seven-day free trial, it costs $5/month (or $60 for the year). Its competitors include TLDR YouTube and VidSummize, which offer similar AI-powered functions for free, though with limitations and restrictions of their own. Step 1: You need an account to access Eightify's seven-day trial. (No credit card required, for once.) Then, paste a YouTube link into the chat box so Eightify's AI tool can summarize the video. Eightify provides a how-to guide for users unsure about the process. Step 2: Wait a few seconds as the video insights and summary are generated. The insights button lets you view a rundown of the video in different tones and formats. With the focus buttons you can alter the text and choose from options that include Insightful, Funny, Actionable and Controversial. There's also an option to change the format from a list to a Q&A, and to select a length: short, more detailed or auto. Step 3: The summary button provides a roundup of the video followed by a more detailed breakdown keyed to timestamps. The insight and summary features both use emojis to help organize and categorize material. Step 4: Lastly, three other buttons let you alter settings, copy text, or download (or share) the information provided. Both the mobile and desktop versions of Eightify offer a manageable user experience, and as an AI tool, it's one of the easiest to navigate -- thankfully, there's no steep learning curve. Though there are various modifications within the tool's sections, there aren't extra frills or pop-ups that take away from its functionality. I can't say that I'd stick with Eightify for $60/year when free options, like the YouTube Summarizer by Glasp, will produce similar results, but Eightify's ability to customize information for large quantities of content may be a selling point. Personally, I'd like to see Eightify partner with businesses and educational institutions as part of an employee or student perk. This could address the cost while focusing on large groups of customers. Outside of professional and educational settings -- like the highly acclaimed Chicken Shop Date YouTube video I used to test it -- the insights and summary buttons within Eightify may provide better takeaways than what you'd find on social media. (Plus, I've never seen X provide actionable insights that can double as self-development homework.) So, maybe there's room for Eightify in your chain of desktop extensions, or folders of applications. The answer comes down to personal needs, frequency and reason for use -- and whether another subscription you may forget you're paying for is worth it.
