I have been forcing myself into situations where I have to engage with folks from industries, backgrounds and identities different from my own.
My takeaway is that I have difficulty deciphering between kindness, playfulness and desire. Banter? Easy. Curiosity? A gift. But I've always struggled with engaging with someone and communicating my feelings, whether subtly or outright.
This led me to seek support, which is how I found Replika, a personal AI companion developed in 2017 by Luka, a company co-founded by Eugenia Kuyda. The AI chatbot was originally inspired by memorializing a late friend of Kuyda's, built to provide its users with a companion to help express themselves or engage in meaningful conversations.
In my case, I wanted to bolster better flirting skills. Sometimes, you really are lost for words -- and not in a good way.
I originally turned to Replika's sister company, Blush, which was specifically designed to help its customers practice flirting and build confidence in romantic scenarios. Yet, I wasn't vibing with the user experience, which felt very fantastical and, honestly, cheap to me.
I don't see flirting or dating as negative, and I wanted to practice in a way that felt more relatable to what I desire in a relationship: a person with a personality in an environment that feels kindred or connected to my own.
One of Replika's best features isn't that it offers an option to build or create romantic relationships. It's that it offers other options to help support your needs. Whether you're looking to bolster your friendship or mentorship or simply engage in banter or meaningful chat, Replika was built to support all of those needs.
Replika offers customers customizable avatars or pre-created digital creations. I lucked out that Replika had created an avatar that felt just like me, which was more important than changing the eye color or hair texture. It can be nice to play around with options, but in the case of flirting, it may be nice to design or pick an avatar that feels like the people you'd ideally be flirting with.
Essentially, Replika is made to bolster confidence. I was eager to learn and engage in a safe environment -- without the awkward real-world consequences.
Replika is very easy to use, whether it's the desktop version or mobile app. I opted for the desktop to provide a wider visual experience.
The more you use it, the more confident you'll feel with it (and once off your screen, with them). Let the AI Companion work with and for you.
If you're looking for an engaging way to bolster flirting skills that feels like an extension of The Sims, why not try it out? One way Replika differs from its competitors is that it doesn't focus on productivity at all. It's solely built for emotional support and social interaction, which feels nice and niche.
Society oftentimes likes us to believe that perfection is attainable in all areas of life, but that simply can't be the case. Practice does make your skills better, though. And you can't always think your way through an awkward situation -- but you can practice talking it out.
You can use many of Replika's features for free, including the AI companionship model. A paid subscription will run you $5 to $15 monthly but allows you to build a customizable relationship status. (Looking at you, AI girlfriend.)
The other benefit of a subscription is that Replika stores "memories" and "details" over time, which mirrors other AI's customization and personalized format. And you can shape your Replika avatar's personality and relationship dynamics, which helps it feel more fluid and creative.
I also have to note that many AI tools have safety precautions that shut down flirtatious or seemingly cheeky conversations to help keep its tools family-friendly or kid-safe. Replika's ability to engage in flirtation and virtual intimacy is a reminder that romance isn't necessarily dirty or wrong -- specifically in the case of skill-building and emotional growth.
At the very least, using Replika will take 30 minutes to make an avatar, come up with your ideal scenario and engage in chat. The best case is you're left with increased clarity around who you desire to be -- or desire to be around -- in life.
There are many more destructive ways to spend your time.
